At coffee, at lunch, or on a long walk

We’d choose the walk. But that’s just us. What would your employees prefer?

One manager takes each of his employees out to coffee or lunch at least two times a year—for the express purpose of getting to know them and having them know him a little better. He goes to those meetings with a few of his favorite stay interview questions in mind.

At the resignation meeting

Granted, this is not ideal. Typically, when an employee has a foot out the door, it’s simply too late to pull them back in. But if you can’t imagine losing them, it’s worth a try.

One manager actually pulled an employee back from the ledge by asking “What would keep you here?” She had accepted another job rather than asking for a promotion. When she told him that, the manager said he couldn’t imagine losing her, and he admitted that he had not told her that often enough, nor had he asked what she wanted. She agreed to stay for a while and to work on a development plan that could position her for the promotion she wanted.
